A henna stain can last for several days or several weeks depending on the location of the stain as well as the length of time that the henna paste remains on the skin. For example, henna stains darker and lasts longer on skin that is thicker, such as the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. These areas tend to have more dead skin cells, enabling the henna to saturate deeper into the stratum corneum. As you make your way inward from the extremities, henna stains tend to be lighter and not as long-lasting because the skin is thinner in these areas.

Henna stain is also affected by how long henna remains on the skin. For best results keep the henna paste on for as long as possible, up to 6 – 8 hours, or over night for the darkest stain. Before the henna paste dries it will be shiny and will easily smear if touched, thereby ruining the design. Once henna paste is dry, (approximately 20 – 30 min), it will start to crack and flake off. In order to keep the henna paste on the skin and help it produce the best stain, you can seal and/or wrap the henna design.

Once the henna paste is completely dry, sealing the henna to the skin with a mixture of lemon/sugar can help keep the henna paste on longer. The longer the paste is left on the skin, the darker and longer lasting the stain will be. Wrapping your henna design (paste still on and sealed with the lemon/sugar) with toilet paper and then covering it with a sock helps to keep the henna paste in place while it does its job. Keeping your body warm by sitting in front of a fire, or out in the sun, or by sipping on a warm drink can also help to get a nice dark stain.
