Henna, also known as lawsonia inermis, is a plant that grows in hot, dry climates. Its leaves are harvested, dried and ground to produce a fine powder which can be used to stain the skin and colour the hair. Natural henna produces a reddish brown stain on the skin that may vary in intensity depending on where the plant is grown. Hotter, dry climates produce henna with a higher, & darker dye content. Henna is grown naturally in places throughout India, Pakistan, Egypt, Iran, Morocco & Yemen. Henna is called by many different names including mehndi, mehandi,  Al-khanna & privet.  Don’t be confused, they are all the same thing.

Henna is also a natural & safe alternative that colours & conditions the hair. It contains NO chemicals & can help to reduce dandruff, it is also known for its soothing & cooling properties. Evidence has been found that suggests henna was used in ancient Egypt thousands of years ago for these purposes.
They even coloured the hair of their horses & donkeys as well.

It is said that the ancient Egyptians used the flowers from the henna plant to make a conditioning ointment that made the skin soft & supple.

In India, Persia (Iran) & parts of Africa henna has, & still is used to create intricate patterns on the palms of the hands & the soles of the feet, as well as to colour the hair. This is a tradition that is tied to celebrations such as weddings, births & for religious reasons.

Henna has been mentioned in many ancient texts such as the Bible & the Q’ran & therefore it is celebrated by many different religions. It is used widely amongst the Muslim community as it is said that Mohammed used henna to colour his beard.

In Morocco, henna is known to bring good luck and is worn by pregnant women to protect them & their unborn children from bad luck.
