The botanical name of Henna tree is Lawsonia inermis. This flowering plant grows in hot, arid regions of North Africa and India. It is the leaves of the plant that are dried and ground to prepare a natural dye for hair or for painting skin for ceremonial purposes. The leaves are abundant in a red-orange molecule called lawsone. Though the stain of henna leaves colour when applied on hair is red-orange, yet it is translucent,
so it combines with the natural colour of the hair.
Many references made to beautiful red hair of women in different texts across the world history and literature were actually references to the dye from henna. Like the references in the Indian court records and medical texts of Ebers Papyrus. In ancient Egypt, even the great royal women Cleopatra and Nefertiti were known to have used it. In Islam, Henna is considered auspicious or “sunnah”.

Bright red hair was considered beautiful and was popular among the women in Europe among women in the 1880s. Henna was thus used to achieve this red tone and to reduce the impact of graying of hair.
