Henna or Mehndi (as referred to in India) application is an age old art of decorating hands and feet, and later the body with intricate designs. Henna paste is made from the powder of dried, crushed leaves of the Henna plant mixed with water and other ingredients.

The Henna Plant (Lawsonia Inermis) grows about 8 to 10 feet high in hot climates and is found in India, Pakistan, North African, Asian and Middle Eastern countries. It is also known as 'Mendee', 'Al-Khanna', 'Smooth Lawsonia','Egyptian Previt' and 'Jamaican Mignonette'.

There are natural dyeing properties found in Henna. The stains range from orange to dark brown. It is known that Henna has been used for medicinal as well as cosmetic purposes for more then 5000 years. Archeological studies show that in ancient Egypt, Henna was used to stain the fingers and toes of the Pharaohs prior to mummification.

The origin of the cosmetic use of Henna is hard to track, with centuries of migration and cultural interaction. The art of its application varies from region to region. The varying designs mean different things to each culture, such as; good health, luck, fertility, wisdom, spiritual enlightenment and others.

The Middle Eastern Henna designs are generally large floral patters on hands and feet. Indian designs are fine, thin lines for lacy, floral patterns covering entire hands and feet. African Henna patters are bold, large geometric designs usually black (after making the Henna paste, they apply a blackish paste made out of ashes, ammonia compounds and other ingredients to stain the Henna black). This is not a recommended procedure as it has been reported to be poisonous. However, various shades are obtainable by mixing with leaves of other plants such as Indigo.

In recent popular culture, Henna has enjoyed a renewal and revival. It is now known as 'Temporary Henna Body Art' or 'Henna Tattoo'. It generally lasts from about a week to four weeks, depending on where the design is on the body; body heat enhances colour. The less exposed to soap and water and rubbing the longer the designs last on the skin. It (Henna stain) also depends on the origin of the Henna, ingredients used to prepare the paste and how long the paste was left to set.

The general awareness of the art form of Henna has increased due to articles in national magazines, publication, television and the use of it by celebrities. Its popularity can also be attributed due to the fact that it is harmless to the skin (in some cases it is actually beneficial) and is only temporary. For those that enjoy tattoos, creativity, colour and showmanship without all the pain and permanence of needle tattooing, Henna Art is the perfect mode of expression.
