Henna, also known as Mehndi, is a plant that grows in hot, arid parts of the world such as the Middle East, North Africa and parts of India. The powdered leaves are made into a paste, generally mixed with lemon juice and various essential oils, and applied to the body in intricate patterns. Henna has been used to decorate the body for thousands of years; written records of its use go back to the Bronze age, and it has even been found on the fingernails of Egyptian mummies.
Henna is traditionally associated with weddings, festivals and other joyous celebrations, and is worn primarily by women. In some cultures men also wear some henna on their hands when they are married. Generally henna is worn on the hands and feet, probably because the thick skin of the palms and soles stains darker than anywhere else on the body. Historically, henna was also used medicinally by both men and women for its cooling and antifungal properties, as a sunblock, and to soothe and strengthen irritated skin.
In some parts of the world henna was used almost exclusively for weddings, while in other places such as Turkey and Morocco, women in their child-bearing years used to wear henna almost continuously. In many places it was regarded as a sign of purity and as protection from evil.
In the 20th century much of the world adopted modern Western fashions, and henna art became less widespread in its traditional strongholds. However, in the last few decades, henna has enjoyed a resurgence in many places. In this country, it has been embraced by a number of celebrities including Madonna, Liv Tyler and Alanis Morrissette.
