For centuries, women have been using henna nights as an opportunity for a social gathering, especially on occasion like wedding. They'll often gather 2 days before a wedding day and decorate bride's hands and feet with henna and even they get their henna done. My mom has told me how on the henna nights for weddings, the bride would be sitting in a corner getting her henna done, while the other women would sing and dance and put henna on each other. There are many songs for this social gathering. One traditional Gujarati song (GARBA) is the most famous one, which describes how henna plant took its journey from Marwad to Gujarat.
This song tells a story. Newly wedded woman's brother-in-law (Devar) brings the plant of henna from Marwad (Rajasthan) for his bhabhi. He made the paste out of fresh henna leaves and asks his bhabhi to decorate her hands. In response bhabhi refuses to do that because her husband is gone out of town (pardes).
Henna, which is also known as mehndi or in botanical terms Lawsonia Enermis, has been in use for over 4000 years. The use of henna has been found back in the time of the Pharaohs when mummifying was done. Henna is always used in India, but its use was increased by the arrivals of the Muslims.
Today you can get henna in any country if you know where to look, whether it's grown locally or imported. It grows naturally in hot dry climates, in places like, India, Pakistan, Africa and morocco. These countries henna stains a little bit different from all the others, and each country has its own style. To view designs from Africa, Middle East and India click on the map.
The use of henna has grown from medical and cooling agent, to an ornament of a bride, to an art anyone, anywhere can enjoy.
